I'm living in Germany and in school we basically learn your american version.
Wait. We learn the american version. Would I not be specially interested in history (I'm finishing school this year), I would not have known of the Sowiet Union participating in WWII. I only know them as "those evil red dwarfs who undeservedly got a piece of germany creating the GDR in there to defend their evil communist country".
Oh, and what i've forgotten:

And as I said, I experienced that live the past 8 years.
