Я предополагаю, что все, кому может быть интересно, либо понимают плохой американский, либо умеют переводить гуглом.
Today I am going to announce the advent of the next revolution. But please, don’t worry. It is not going to be one of those revolutions, when armed mobs are marching over countries killing and robbing each other. It will be rather a fundamental change in relations between Man and Universe caused by technological progress. So it is basically good news, a good event – and everybody is invited to join.
I, personally, joined last December. Originally I was not going to do anything so dramatical. I was just tired from crashes of my family computers. If one has a daughter or two, plus a wife, plus oneself, each with own laptop where they keep pictures and notes, one is surely in for troubles. Computers don’t last forever, they used to be killed by virus or some internal decease each 3-5years… and normal sane people don’t like to back up their data.
So, pretty often one have a daughter running amok with the war cry: “Dad, you have to get me my files back”. You know my daughters are pretty fierce creatures and one really prefers to keep them happy. And one’s wife tends to fall into depression: “all my pictures and poems are gone… forever… evidently you don’t love me anymore… “I’ll tell you: running amok is not so bad after all. And then one get the same problem and feels the he is completely stupid lazy thoughtless idiot… one can live with all that, but to live without that - it is much, much better.
I thought about that and tried couple things… and then I bought 2 terabyte USB hard drive and copied there everything from every family computer… and it all was just about two hundred gigabytes.
And I was there sitting and thinking: “But… that is incredible!… inside that box… there is everything! All our notes and letters. Scans of tax returns, credit card statements. All the music that all of us ever downloaded. All tens of thousands pictures and video clips that we ever made for last ten years. Everything is inside that small box, which is only hundred bucks and it is only using one tenth of it!
But this means that I can put there ninety more years of the life of my family in that box… But ninety years… it’s about four generations! My grand-grand-grandchildren will be able to follow my life in very minute details, to see how I moved, to hear my voice! And I – I even don’t know names of most of my grand-grandparents. It is… it is huge! It is a revolution. It is bigger than electricity or the internet
It is like literacy. Like industrial revolution. It is like last revolution in communications – with all that cars, planes, phones and television, which fundamentally changed relations between simple private human beings and space. And now we are on the verge of changes – fundamental and dramatical changes – in relations between simple private human beings and time. Yes! This is going to be next revolution and I’m going to join it.
OK, now I am a revolutionary. What are to be my next steps?
First step addressed a risk. That hard drive can die any time as happily as any other computer. That means that one copy one is equal to about zero. So I bought a second box and made a second copy of my Everything. Now, because the probability for two boxes to die simultaneously is very small, two copy are equal to about infinity.
Next I looked at contents. So far my Everything is not complete. Currently my family consists of two – let’s say – nodes: here, in USA and in Russia in Novosibirsk. but my son already has a terabyte storage with a lot everything on it. And it is too big to be shared through Internet. But yesterday my wife flew to Russia to spent a couple months with our future granddaughter a she took one of the boxes with her. There our part will be copied to his storage and their part to our disk and when she will be back, we will have copies of the Everything in two locations on the opposite sides of the planet, so no tornado, earthquake or power plant explosion will possibly destroy It. It is going to last forever! Or at least hundreds of years.
And, now, it is pretty clumsy, dim-witted Everything. So it has to evolve. In two, five, twenty years it will much better organized, there be will be some categories, some tables of contents and catalogues. We also will need convenient ways to synchronize multiple copies. So we will find or develop adequate tools and rules for all that. All revolutions are working through people and this one will not be an exception.
And now you all are warned about its advent. Now you can or enthusiastically join it or just go with the flow or even to dodge it – like those Amish people dodged some previous revolutions. And in any case you don’t have to take that my speech to seriously, because all that is mostly a joke.
